Several central Indiana counties back up and running after 911 outage

Phone calls to 911 in several Indiana counties were disrupted for more than two hours Tuesday night.

GREENFIELD, Ind. — An outage to 911 emergency service that impacted several counties in central Indiana has been resolved.

The outage was reported by several county dispatch centers starting around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12. While calls to 911 were disrupted, most counties said emergencies could still be reported by texting 911. 

Boone, Hancock and Madison counties all reported outages on their social media pages.

Dispatchers in Hancock County report 911 service has been disrupted in several central Indiana counties.

The outage was reported around 6 p.m. Tuesday by the Hancock County 911 Center, which said they are working with providers to resolve the issue.

If you are in need of police or fire assistance or medical attention, call the dispatch center's non-emergency number at 317-477-4400. The county said texting 911 was still operational.

Boone County also reported a 911 outage Tuesday. The communications center reported that texting 911 was still working and that residents with an emergency should text 911. 

Boone County Communications is experiencing problems with our admin telephone lines and 9-1-1 lines. AT&T is working on a resolution. Thank you.

Madison County also reported the outage and recommends texting 911 in case of an emergency. 

In Hamilton County, officials say the 911 center remains operational to receive emergency calls. However, they ask anyone who is trying to contact the dispatch center with a non-emergency to call Hamilton County Public Safety Communications at 317-776-9695 at this time. 

IMPD noted that Indianapolis was not affected by the 911 outage.

The Indiana State 911 Board shared the following statement with 13News about the outage: 

"Currently, we are running on our backup 911 systems, and our text-to-911 systems remain fully operational. We are working diligently to identify and resolve the issue that caused the outage.  We’ll provide an update when we have more information to share."
