Woman holding knife shot, killed by police in southern Indiana

The incident happened Tuesday evening on Thomas Street in North Vernon.

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after a woman who allegedly moved toward officers with a knife was fatally shot by police in Jennings County Tuesday evening.

Around 7 p.m. April 9, North Vernon Police Department officers and Jennings County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported disturbance at a home on Thomas Street in North Vernon. That's near the intersection of Lincoln and South Gum streets.

Officers found a woman identified by state police as 23-year-old Rachel Blake inside the bathroom of the home. State police said Blake was holding a large knife, and officers "repeatedly told her to drop the knife, and they also used electronic control weapons (tasers) in an attempt to disarm her."

Blake "soon advanced toward officers with the knife," an ISP spokesperson said, and two North Vernon Police Department officers fired their guns, hitting her at least once.

Blake was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jennings County Coroner's Office.

The sheriff's office and North Vernon Police Department requested Indiana State Police investigate the incident. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and state police will present the case to the Jennings County prosecutor for review after the investigation concludes.
