Fiesta Lawrence is a celebration of the city's many cultures and traditions

The May 11 event begins at noon on Civic Plaza.

INDIANAPOLIS — Final planning is underway for a big community celebration in Lawrence, called Fiesta Lawrence.

When 13News talked with with Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield about her first 100 days in office a few weeks ago, she said events like this are important when it comes to creating community, an opportunity for people from all walks of life to gather and do something fun together.

At the event, there will be an international food festival with about 20 food trucks and booths, ethnic dance performances and all sorts of other activities.

Lawrence is described by some as kind of an ethnic melting pot, in large part because of Fort Benjamin Harrison's longtime presence in the community.

"Fiesta Lawrence is really just a celebration of all the many different cultures that make up Lawrence," said Jami Weirich, of the city's parks department. "We're excited to bring everybody together and truly celebrate those that make make up Lawrence and make it such a great community."

Fiesta Lawrence is Saturday, May 11 at Civic Plaza from noon until 4 p.m.

The event is free, including parking. Click here for more information.
