Hamilton County's first Safe Haven Baby Box installed at Carmel fire station

A Safe Haven Baby Box was just installed at Carmel Clay Township Fire Station Number 45.

CARMEL, Ind. (WTHR) - There's a new place for parents of newborns to safely surrender their babies if they can't care for them.

A Safe Haven Baby Box was just installed at Carmel Clay Township Fire Station Number 45.

It's the first in Hamilton County.

Once a baby is put inside the temperature-controlled box, the fire department gets an alert.

The program was started by a woman who was abandoned as a baby.

"I have a personal connection to this story and I don't want to ever find an abandoned baby in our state ever again and I have made it my life's mission to make sure that doesn't happen," said founder Monica Kelsey.

In July, a baby was surrendered at Decatur Township fire station as they were installing their box.

Each box costs about $10,000 to install.
