Downtown block party unites community, spreads love

The block party included free food, free haircuts, music and dancing.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of Hoosiers came downtown for a community block party celebrating love and unity Saturday. The party took place on Ohio Street between Pennsylvania and Delaware.

It was organized by City Life along with Michael’s Soul Kitchen and D R Barber Salon. Its theme being “Love over hate.”

“We brought every backyard barbecue from the north side, the east and the west to one remote area to showcase our love over hate, our light over darkness, faith over fear, unity over division and Jesus over everything,” Antonio Patton, who helped organized the block party, said.

The block party included free food from Michael’s Soul Kitchen, free haircuts from D R Barber Salon, music and dancing.

Patton said he working to improve police relationships with the city’s youth. Officers also joined the party to get to know the community.

“We want our youth to know that we don’t see blue. We see a mom and a dad behind there—a brother and a sister, a friend, a cousin, an auntie, a niece and when you see that, you don’t see blue, we see a human,” Patton said.
