Coburn Place receives $1.25M grant from Jeff Bezos' foundation

The Day 1 Families Fund has awarded Coburn Place with a $1.25 million grant.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The Day 1 Families Fund has awarded Coburn Place with a $1.25 million grant. The Day 1 Families Fund gives leadership grants to organizations that work to provide shelter and hunger support for those in need. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos started the Day One Fund in 2018 with a commitment to give $2 million in grants.

Coburn Place is Indiana's largest long-term housing provider for survivors of domestic abuse.

"This is an amazing opportunity for Coburn Place to focus on something it’s been trying to accomplish for quite some time — shorten the wait time that Indianapolis survivors endure to gain access to safe and stable housing," executive director Julia Kathary said in a news release. "While Coburn Place has grown in the last three years the fact remains that there is not enough affordable housing in Indianapolis that is safe, accessible and sustainable for survivors."

The grant money will be used to bring more safe and affordable housing for the community Coburn Place serves.

Coburn Place is one of 32 organizations to receive a grant. There was one other in Indiana: Lafayette Transitional Housing Center in Lafayette.

Lafayette Transitional Housing Center also received $1.25 million. This year's recipients received a total of $98.5 million.
