INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission has suspended for six months the attorney who defended the man convicted of the 2000 slaying of 19-year-old Indiana University student Jill Behrman.
WIBC-FM reported Monday that Patrick Baker took on defendant John R. Myers' case without being asked, in hopes the gaining publicity, then charged Myers' family $1,500 in printing costs for an appeal he had said he'd handle for free.
The commission also says Baker falsely told the jury in his opening statement that a police dog had "alerted" at someone else's house. The commission says it finds nothing wrong with Baker's courtroom performance other than that statement, and says it's satisfied it did not prejudice the case
Myers was convicted in 2007. He's serving a 65-year sentence.
