At least 8 injured in northwest Indianapolis crash

Police say at least eight people were hurt in a crash on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
Police say up to 7 cars were involved in a crash at W. 73rd St. and Spring Mill Rd. Friday night.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Police say at least eight people were hurt in a crash on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. on W. 73rd Street near Spring Mill Road.

Police say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, but some of the eight victims taken to the hospital suffered serious injuries. Two of the victims were children, police said.

Up to seven vehicles were involved in the crash. Witnesses told police one or two cars ran a red light at the intersection. One witness told Eyewitness News the driver of one of the crashed victims told him they were being chased from W. 71st Street and Michigan Road, but police said they were still investigating what caused the crash.

Neighbors say they heard "what sounded like an explosion" and came out to help.

"See a lot of accidents right here, especially this curve right here...but in 12 years, this is the worst accident I've seen," said Mark Coovert.

Coovert says the engine from one of the crashed vehicles landed in his driveway.
