Annual boys camp tackles concerns over race relations

It’s made up mostly of black boys and organizers knew they had to address current concerns with race relations.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — An annual boys’ youth summit got underway this week.

It’s made up mostly of black boys and organizers knew they had to address current concerns with race relations.

The Young Men’s' Incorporated Camp is in their 26th year, where they provide mentorship for young men between the ages of 8 and17.

They dedicated the first day of this year to talking about the death of George Floyd and police relations.

“Some of them are fearful, and some of them are confused and some are just totally going into a state of depression,” said Rev. Malachi Walker who runs the camp.

One of the camp counselors says it was difficult to process after first seeing the video of Floyd’s death.

“I was sad because I put myself in that position. what if my mom had to deal with that. That is painful,” said Dajon Currin, who is 19.

The camp runs 9 weeks. Typically, they see about 100 participants but had to cut enrollment in half this year due to the coronavirus.
