After mass shootings, Carson calls for action on pending gun safety bills

It's not about new gun control laws, according to Carson

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso are sparking new calls for immediate action in Washington.

But it's not about new gun control laws.

Indiana Congressman Andre Carson (D-Indianapolis) says he wants to see an emergency session on Capitol Hill to pass several gun safety bills that are already in the works.

He also says President Trump's administration is partially to blame for rising racial tensions across the U.S.

"I think it speaks to the growing anti-immigrant sentiment, the xenophobia, the islamophobia that exists," Carson said Wednesday. "The largest threat to our internal security. unfortunately, comes from white supremacists and white nationalists."

The Justice Department is considering charging the El Paso shooting suspect with a federal hate crime after uncovering a racist anti-immigrant social media post.

The suspect in the Dayton shooting died during the attack but police have not found any links to potential hate crimes or racial motives.
