East Indy house that caught fire and left 2 in serious condition had multiple problems

The fire happened just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of North Oakland Avenue, near 10th and North Rural streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) is investigating a fire that left two people in serious condition and another injured  early Saturday morning.

Just before 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 19, IFD responded to the 800 block of North Oakland Avenue, near 10th and North Rural streets, to a report of a fire started by cooking.

One woman jumped from the second story of the house onto a neighbor's air condition unit, while another man evacuated through the front door which was on fire, according to IFD.

Both were taken to local hospitals in serious condition, and another man went to get checked for possible smoke inhalation.

One resident told IFD he had been cooking when a blanket caught on fire.

There were no working smoke alarms in the house, according to officials.

13News obtained new video from a ring doorbell camera that shows the moment Indianapolis firefighters responded to the scene.

Concerns about this home go beyond Saturday's early morning fire.

Neighbors told 13News this home has been a problem for quite some time.

There has been suspected criminal activity, and 13News found there were multiple police runs made to the home in recent years.

Those calls include domestic disturbances, a death investigation, vandalism and a person shot.

Neighbors said multiple people lived in the home and described it as a "roommate house,” which means each person had their own room but shared common areas.
A spokesperson for the fire department confirmed that to be true.
