16th Street bridge over White River set to close next summer

If everything goes according to plan, the 16th Street bridge project is set to be completed in the summer of 2027.

INDIANAPOLIS — Construction season is underway in Indianapolis. That includes the historic 16th Street bridge project on the northwest side. The city is working around the total solar eclipse and the month of May to avoid congestion on the road.

The bridge that goes over White River connects downtown to Speedway and Haughville. After decades of traffic, the city says it is overdue for repairs.

Built in 1946, the wear and tear is visible.

Beginning this summer, crews will begin working under the bridge.

The bridge is set to close in the summer of 2025, just as the nearby 30th Street bridge is set to open.

"Put simply, we'll stay on schedule, but not burden residents with two bridges being out at once," said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

Crews will resurface the street and sidewalks.

"It's time now for the refresh that it deserves and most importantly, I think a refresh that will include better pedestrian facilities and provide the same historical significance, cultural significance with the architecture and façade," said Department of Public Works director Brandon Herget.

It's part of the city's plan to add more than 20 miles of sidewalks, 20 miles of bike lanes, nearly 20 miles of trails and convert Michigan and New York streets to two-ways.

"The city is doing all that it can to make it safer and easier to get around Indy, whether you walk, bike, drive or ride," said Hogsett.

If everything goes according to plan, the 16th Street bridge project is set to be completed in the summer of 2027.
