Indianapolis, Oct. 5 - ISTEP scores are going up at Indianapolis charter schools.
Mayor Bart Peterson made the announcement Thursday morning at the Decatur Discovery Academy, one of 16 charter schools in Indianapolis. These are public schools with the freedom to teach in creative ways, but needing to perform at a higher level.
The city's annual accountability report reveals that ISTEP plus pass rates increased by seven percent in 2004 and 2005. The pass rate rose by 22-percent between 2003 and 2005.
Mayor Peterson says 74-percent of students at his charter schools progressed at a faster pace than their peers in schools throughout the state. Peterson is the only mayor in the country who is able to sponsor a charter school.
