Hamilton County, July 25 - A new activity on Monday at Conner Prairie's adventure camp was surviving the heat like a pioneer.

James Molin says he needed "to drink a lot of water and it's really hot."

The Fishers museum's day camp became a lesson in keeping cool in extreme heat. There were lots of water breaks and moving programs inside.

Councilors say they're concerned about children becoming dehydrated.

Nurse Natalie Grear observes, "It's a lot hotter this summer, more kids in with headaches and tummy aches because they're overheated when last summer there were only a few total."

While the air temperature was in the 90s, all around us it's hotter in cars and on pavement.

"Wow! It's amazing," that from worn out tennis players enrolled in Washington Township's summer tennis program where kids from four to 17 were out in brutal heat on courts registering 139 degrees.

Instructor Jonathan Whitham says, "We try to keep them out of the heat as much as possible. We want them playing tennis, but we find other activities to keep them safe and out of the heat."

Sahm golf pro Geg Dycus says the normally busy golf course had more cancellations than players. "Had a couple junior golf programs and the enthusiasm wasn't there because it's so hot, lots of time out for breaks."

While meteorologists say the stagnant weather is far from record breaking, with heat indexes topping over 100 degrees, the sweltering weather pattern finally breaks later this week in what will likely go down as one of most uncomfortable stretches of heat and humidity in years.
