INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Don't drink the water.

A study of water quality on planes by DietDetective.com and Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center is making strong recommendations about what you should and shouldn't drink on some major U.S. airlines.

One of the recommendations said that passengers should "never drink any" water on flights that isn't bottled.

When it comes to the bathroom, passengers should avoid even washing their hands and instead use hand-sanitizer. Researchers also recommend that passengers do not drink coffee or tea on flights as these beverages could be made with water that doesn't come from a sealed bottle.

In a ranking of water quality for 23 airlines (11 major and 12 regional), Spirit and JetBlue tied for last place with scores of 1, on a 0-to-5 scale.

The scores were based on 10 criteria which included fleet size, positive E. coli and coliform water samples and cooperation in providing answers to water quality questions.

The airlines with the highest scores were Allegiant and Alaska Air, both receiving a 3.3 out of 5.
