INDIANAPOLIS — One man was killed and five more people were injured, including an off-duty IMPD officer, in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis early Sunday morning.
Police said the incident happened in the 9400 block of East Washington Street, near North Mitthoefer Road, around 1:30 a.m. March 24 when two off-duty officers were working security in full uniform at a nearby bar and heard a disturbance in the parking lot.
According to IMPD, there was an exchange of gunfire between the two officers and at least one suspect. In the shooting, five men – including the officer – and one woman were injured.
The officer and four other victims were described by police as "stable." Police said the civilian victims are two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman.
One man, later identified as the suspect, died at a local hospital from his injuries shortly after the shooting.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 37-year-old Dominique Lamonte Durham Sr.
"We're sorry that someone lost their life here tonight. I'm also very happy that our officer did not sustain any significant injuries, although we know that there's a long road ahead for him as he deals with the emotional impact of this situation," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said. "I'm proud of our response."
Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, IMPD released an update regarding the incident. In the update, police said an officer arrived on scene to the disturbance in the parking lot and saw Durham actively firing a gun.
The officer then got out of his car and fired at least one shot at Durham, police said. Durham reportedly fired back and shot the officer. A second officer on the scene saw the shooting and then shot Durham, killing him.
Both officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officers involved in a shooting investigation.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team and IMPD Internal Affairs are conducting separate investigations.
The officer who was shot was reportedly released from the hospital early Sunday evening.
"This was a very chaotic scene, it's my understanding," Bailey said. "Proud of the way the officers and our partners with IEMS and the fire department responded tonight to treat these victims. My heart goes out to all those impacted by this."
The disturbance right before shots were fired can be heard on surveillance video from a nearby business.
Hours later, trails of blood, tipped over barricades, bloody surfaces and bullet holes remained as evidence in the parking lot and strip mall.
On Sunday, Perry Safford traveled from Carmel to eat at 11:11 Bar & Grille and came right back out, confused.
"It was empty and kind of dirty," Safford said. "Looked like some tables were tipped over."
On Tuesday, a state commission voted to not extend 1111's liquor license.
The extension vote had been added to Tuesday's meeting agenda after the shooting. One commission member cited an excise police report which said the shooting started inside the establishment. The commission invited the bar's liquor permit holder to speak at the meeting.
