Police make arrest in Lafayette fatal shooting

Lafayette Police have a man in custody after a fatal shooting.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) — Lafayette Police have a man in custody after a fatal shooting that killed an 18-year-old early Sunday morning.

Police arrested 20-year-old Alexander Garcia Johnson around 7 p.m. Sunday for the murder of Jontae Billup-Brooks. The teenager's brother, Keyonte, was also shot, but survived. He was treated at IU Hospital and has since been released.

Officers located Jontae suffering from a gunshot wound at an apartment on Rubble Way near Poland Hills Road and Twyckenham Boulevard in Lafayette around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Medics transported him to Saint Elizabeth Hospital, where he later died.

Keyonte had left the scene of the shooting and officers found him in the 3400 block of Coventry Lane.

Police found the suspect, Garcia-Johnson in the 300 block of Cheshire Drive in Lafayette.

The investigation is ongoing and police do not believe that this was a random act of violence.
