35-year-old man shot by officers on Indy's north side has died; no officers injured

It happened in the 3900 block of Broadway Street, near 38th Street and College Avenue, around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD confirmed an officer-involved shooting that happened Thursday afternoon turned deadly.

It happened in the 3900 block of Broadway Street, near 38th Street and College Avenue, around 2:30 p.m. May 2. 

According to police, they were called for a person pointing a gun and threatening to shoot people. Two calls were made to 911 about the incident, one in the 600 block of East 38th Street and the other at a home on Broadway Street. The person who called from the Broadway Street address told dispatchers a man they did not know had a gun on their porch.

Once officers encountered the man, a witness told detectives the suspect pointed the firearm at police. Two officers fired at the man, striking him. 

Police said the man was treated by officers until medics arrived and took him to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 35-year-old Lemar Brandon Qualls.

No officers or other citizens were injured, according to IMPD. Police said they located a firearm at the scene, which was damaged in the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

According to IMPD, this is the fourth person shot and killed by IMPD officers in 2024.

The officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras at the time of the incident, and at least one of the officers' cameras were activated during the shooting. 

The shooting will be investigated by IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team, as well as a separate investigation by IMPD Internal Affairs. 

After the criminal process has concluded, a civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing. This happens after any attempted use of deadly force against a person, per protocol.
