Neighbor accused of shooting man mowing near property line in Montgomery County

The suspect told police he shot his neighbor because he feared for his life.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Indiana — A man is accused of shooting his neighbor, who was mowing near the property line of their Montgomery County homes.

According to police, deputies were called Sunday, April 21 to County Road 475 West in Browns Valley. Officers found a 55-year-old man wounded.

Police said the man had been mowing near the property line with his 53-year-old neighbor when that neighbor shot him.

The 53-year-old neighbor told police he feared for his life when he shot the man, a police report states.

The wounded man's girlfriend showed police video of the incident she took on her cellphone.

In the cellphone video, police said they could see the man mowing as the other neighbor approached with a leaf blower. The man then drove the mower toward his neighbor and almost hit the neighbor's leg, police said. The neighbor continued to aim the leaf blower and then went behind the mower and shot the man.

When police talked to the suspected shooter, he allegedly told them, "I was afraid for my life and shot him."

The suspected shooter was arrested and taken to jail for attempted murder. He had not been formally charged at the time this article was published.

(NOTE: 13News does not usually name a suspect until they are formally charged by the prosecutor's office.)

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Det. Jared Kirby at 765-362-3740.
