IMPD SWAT teams take barricaded person into custody on near west side

Officers responded to a home in the 1100 block of North Belmont Avenue, near West 12st Street, around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

INDIANAPOLIS — A man barricaded in an apartment on the near west side of Indianapolis was taken into custody just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

An Indianapolis school nearby had been placed on lockdown while an IMPD SWAT team responded to the disturbance across the street.

Around 7 a.m. March 6, officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a male and female inside a house in the 1100 block of North Belmont Avenue, near 10th Street and North White River Parkway Drive West.

In an update around 8:30 a.m., an IMPD spokesperson said the female came out of the house and the male remained barricaded inside the home. It was believed he had a gun.

According to court documents, the woman got out of the house by jumping out of a window and had visible bruises all over her body.

Matchbook Learning at Wendell Phillips 63 announced it would holding an e-learning day, with no on-site activities.

13News received the following statement from the school:

"The situation began prior to school starting. The building has been closed for the day per IMPD guidance but all staff & students are safe. Students who were already on the way to school whose parents were not reached yet have been relocated with staff to our community partner’s site, Victory in the City. We are very thankful for the rapid support and assistance given by Victory in the City, IMPD, and IPS. Huge thanks to them for helping to ensure our safety and to making the day as smooth as possible for our students & staff."

The incident resolved just before 1:30 p.m. when the man was taken into custody.

He was preliminarily charged with criminal confinement, battery and domestic battery resulting in moderate injury.
