'Fierce in everything he did' | Indianapolis mom remembers 25-year-old son who died in drive-by shooting

Court docs say Addam Hart, who recently got engaged, was the unintended victim of a shooting March 28 near East 21st Street and North Mitthoefer Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — Rebecca Roush said her son, Addam Hart, was everything a mother would want in a son.

"How many kids his age tell you, 'I love you,' every single day? He was goofy. He didn't care, but he was fierce in everything he did," Roush said.

The 25-year-old just got engaged to his girlfriend in February. Then Hart, his fiancée, her 5-year-old son and his mother moved into their new home on Gable Drive, near East 21st Street and North Mitthoefer Road on the east side of Indianapolis. It's where they had plans to build their life together.

Those plans came to a tragic end March 28.

"We had all just gone to bed. The lights were out. I'm hearing 'pop, pop, pop.' It sounded like electricity popping in the ceiling," Roush said.

That noise turned out to be the sound of bullets coming into the house. Roush said the 5-year-old was standing in a doorway of a room screaming when Hart attempted to rescue him.

"It was the second round that came through that was just 'pop, pop,' and Addam was hit at that time, and it was a through and through," Roush said.

Hart was taken to a hospital and later died with his mother and fiancée by his side.

25-year-old Addam Hart was killed in a shooting in the 2200 block of Gable Drive, March 28, 2024 in Indianapolis.

"She was wiping the blood coming out of his nose and mouth because of what happened to him," Roush said. "It's not pretty. I still see his face because of what they did. It's not something you ever want to see. It devastates you beyond belief," Roush said. "His fiancée and I knew it had something to do with the previous owners of that house."

Court documents say investigators found 30 bullet holes in the house. Prosecutors charged 16-year-old Savannah Allen as an adult in this case, who claimed to be the vehicle's driver. But Allen allegedly told police her boyfriend and another teen got out and fired the shots into the house.

According to court documents, Allen said one of her friends said she was raped by a man who they believed lived on Gable Drive. However, their alleged intended target no longer lived at that home.

"They didn't care. Don't care. How in the heck did they get access to guns? Those people who gave them guns should be charged, too," Roush said.

Roush wants justice for her son.

"They don't deserve the life that they'll be able to live that my son wasn't able to," Roush said.

Hart was an organ donor. His mom said he was able to save five lives. Now, his family has a recording of his heartbeat placed in a teddy bear. Roush said she listens to it often.
