19-year-old killed in shooting on Indy's near north side

The shooting happened near East 25th Street and North Keystone Avenue around 4 p.m. March 17.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a man was fatally shot on the city's near north side Sunday afternoon.

Shortly before 4 p.m. March 17, officers were called to the 2400 block of Hillside Avenue, near East 25th Street and North Keystone avenue, on a report of a person shot.

Officers found a man outside with a gunshot wound(s). IMPD initially said the man was in critical condition, but later confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 19-year-old Devin Scanlon.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that a "disturbance of some kind" occurred prior to the shooting.

"We'll continue to say over and over again that disturbances, disputes or disagreements can be solved in different ways," IMPD Ofc. Samone Burris said. "You don't have to resort to using violence, guns or any other weapon to get your point across."

Police said one person was detained, but their involvement in the incident hasn't been determined. IMPD said it believes there is no known threat to the public, and the people involved knew each other.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Anthony Johnson at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Anthony.Johnson@indy.gov.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
