Off-duty IMPD officers involved in deadly shooting identified

INDIANAPOLIS — Metro police have identified two officers who reportedly fired their guns during a deadly shooting on the far east side of Indianapolis early Sunday. 

The shooting occurred in the 9400 block of East Washington Street, near North Mitthoefer Road, around 1:30 a.m. March 24 when two off-duty officers were working security in full uniform at a nearby bar and heard a disturbance in the parking lot.

According to IMPD, there was an exchange of gunfire between the two officers and at least one suspect. In the shooting, five men – including the officer – and one woman were injured.

On Friday, March 29, IMPD identified the officers involved in the shooting as Ofc. Arturo Barron, a 3-year veteran of the department, and 6-year veteran Ofc. Joel Cain. The department released the names after conducting a threat assessment, per IMPD policy.

IMPD is investigating after one person was killed and five more were injured after a shooting in the 9400 block of East Washington Street.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, as part of the department's standard procedure for officers involved in a shooting investigation.

Police said the civilian victims are two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, whose conditions were described by police as "stable" on Sunday.

One man, later identified as the suspect, died at a local hospital from his injuries shortly after the shooting. The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 37-year-old Dominique Lamonte Durham Sr.

The officer who was shot was reportedly released from the hospital early Sunday evening.

The shooting is currently being reviewed by IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team, while a separate investigation is being conducted by the departments Internal Affairs Unit.

Once the criminal process is completed in the investigation, a civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will review the incident. This review is mandatory for any use of deadly force against a person.
