Former Miss Indiana Latina, sister arrested in drug trafficking bust

Glenis Zapata and her sister are accused of money laundering.

INDIANAPOLIS — Pictured on the Miss Indiana Latina Facebook Page is Glenis Zapata, the beauty queen who was the first Hoosier to win the title.

A federal indictment out of Illinois says Zapata worked as a flight attendant on a private jet with who investigators refer to as a "known crew member."

According to the indictment, investigators say — on those flights — Zapata would take drug money to be exchanged at banks in the U.S.

Her sister, Ilenis Zapata, is accused of helping her launder the money at the bank she worked at in Lafayette.

Ilenis is accused of laundering $400,000 in drug money herself.

Investigators say they were able to do so by trading in lower denominated bills for higher ones.

Those court documents state Glenis did it twice in 2019, both transactions over $100,000.

When 13News checked to see if the sisters were being held at the Cook County Jail in Chicago, it had no record of them being there.
