Detectives make progress in homicide investigation

Eyewitness News has learned detectives have an idea of who they are looking for in a homicide case.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Investigators appear to be inching closer to finding the killer of a prominent Indianapolis doctor.

Eyewitness News has learned detectives have an idea of who they are looking for as well as some of the other players involved, but they stop short of calling them suspects.

On Wednesday, police revealed that Dr. Kevin Rodgers was murdered in a robbery.

As a doctor at IU School of Medicine, Rodgers helped save lives. As a volunteer at Cathedral High School, "Dr. Kevin" is credited with helping shape lives.

Tailgating is serious fun at Cathedral. According to principal Dave Worland, Rodgers made the most of it.

“He liked to cook and say “hey, what to you think? Do you like that steak, do you like the hamburger?'” Worland said with a smile.

He described a parent and volunteer people could count on. And they did for 16 years.

“He was always here to serve,” Worland said. “He wasn’t here for anything for himself, he was here to serve others. Usually it was the students.”

He helped coach a championship lacrosse team, generously donated his cooking skills to raise money for the private Catholic school and took on other chores.

“He was a guy who really enjoyed family, friends and people,” Worland said.

The last person anyone expected to be murdered in their own home in the middle of the day. Worland can’t understand why anyone, even a robber, would want to hurt him.

“I can’t imagine him doing anything on his part that would get anybody so angry that would have prompted someone to harm him,” Worland said.

Rodgers' youngest son attends Cathedral, as did his three older sons.

Two families are in mourning.

“Beyond his physical presence, we are going to miss his spirit,” the principal said. “We are going to miss his involvement. We are going to miss his love for the kids and people.”

Police sound certain there are people, "key players", they called them, who know details of the crime.

Police are asking for information. If people are afraid to talk, they’ll take anonymous tips.
