Police: 2 men killed in Avon shooting during 'drug-related robbery'

Police were called to a home on Glensford Drive, near North Avon Avenue and Rockville Road, around 7:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of a person shot.

AVON, Ind. — Avon police are investigating a shooting Thursday evening that left two people dead.

Police were called to a home on Glensford Drive, just northeast of North Avon Avenue and Rockville Road, around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11 for a report of a person shot. Officers arrived to find two people who had been shot.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other died at the hospital.

The Avon Police Department identified the two people as 20-year-old Samual Oliver, of Plainfield, and 20-year-old Patrick Day, of Avon.

"Based upon the information gathered over the past several hours, the two individuals involved in this incident were believed to have been engaged in a drug-related robbery that took place near a vehicle in the Park Place neighborhood," the department said in a social media message.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed the two men shot were the only people involved in the incident.

Plainfield police also searched Oliver’s home and recovered evidence, but would not disclose what was found.

Avon police said they also obtained Ring doorbell video of the incident from a neighbor. They expect the investigation to last several days.

"We will continue to process things and identify new witnesses and have some discussions with other interested parties that may have some portion of the information that will help us have a deeper understanding of what took place,” said Avon Police Deputy Chief Brian Nugent.

13News also spoke with Day’s younger sister, Paris. She said she was driving to her mom’s house when she saw the scene.

"I remember when we pulled up, me and my little sister got to the scene and there were people laying in the road and our mom was laying on the ground screaming,” she said. “It just doesn’t feel real yet.”

Paris Day said her family does not know the other victim.

"I don't think anyone deserved to die in this. They were both young and they were kids,” Paris said.

These are the first homicides in Avon since 2022.

13News contacted the family and friends of Samuel Oliver but did not hear back.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

Avon Police also encourage neighbors to sign up for the “Community Camera” program. It is similar to other programs in Danville and Brownsburg. It helps police with investigations.
