Get help filing your taxes for free

With the tax filing season set to kick off Jan. 29, it is important to know your options ahead of time.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tax law is complicated.

That's why there are free resources out there to help. With the tax filing season set to kick off Jan. 29, it is important to know your options ahead of time.

The IRS offers free software to people with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $79,000 or less.

Once you figure out your AGI, head to IRS.gov/freefile to check out the software.

If you want free in-person help, there are tax prep programs for people with low to moderate income.

The AARP Foundation Tax Aide site says their free tax services generally run from Feb. 1 to April 15, and their locations may require an appointment. While the AARP did not previously have an income limit, customers' tax forms must be simple. For example, they will not accept forms with rental income.

Indy Free Tax Prep also offers free in-person help. Their income threshold is typically around $66,000.

If you have tax disputes, Indiana Legal Services' Low Income Taxpayer Clinic might be able to help you out.

Other ways to file

Agency leadership says this year, more walk-in centers will be open to help taxpayers, enhanced paperless processing will help with IRS correspondence and enhanced individual online accounts will be available for taxpayers.

Additionally, eligible taxpayers will be able to file their 2023 returns online directly with the IRS through a new, electronic direct file pilot. The IRS says it will be rolled out in phases and is expected to be widely available in mid-March.

The IRS expects most refunds to be issued in less than 21 days.
