Longtime restaurant to close as Nickel Plate development underway

The Nickel Plate Bar and Grill has been bought out as part of a new $157 million development project that's already underway.

FISHERS, Ind. (WTHR) — A longtime Fishers restaurant is closing its doors. The Nickel Plate Bar and Grill is calling it quits later this month.

The local favorite has been bought out as part of a new $157 million development project that's already underway.

Each building in the Nickel Plate District along 116th Street has its own personality. From the walls to the address markings, each adds some charm.

"I really like the vibe, the old school brick, everything that's really nice and I like that a lot," said Alaina McFadden, who lives in Indianapolis.

The Nickel Plate Bar and Grill will be closing on April 20 after 28 years in business.

"That's a bummer," said Earl Crabtree, who lives in Fishers. "It's been here forever. Any place like that that goes down, it's a shame."

The owners shared the news on Facebook, saying the city of Fishers and Browning (the company taking over) will make sure the building is preserved and put another restaurant in its place.

Browning has big plans between North and South streets, with the Nickel Plate Railroad on the west and Maple Street to the east.

On the north side, there will be a five-story apartment building with 241 units, 10 townhomes, plus office and retail space. The south side is going to have a 6-story office building with a high-end boutique hotel and parking garage.

"I think when a city is building and stuffs going up, that's a good sign," said Crabtree. "I think you have to have an open mind, give it a shot."

Other people we talked with say they are concerned that too much is being developed in this area.

The work is already underway, after the project was announced in December. To read more about it, click here.
