Indianapolis Zoo announces white rhino calf's name

The public will be able to see Xola this summer.

INDIANAPOLIS — Say hello to Xola!

The Indianapolis Zoo announced the name of its new white rhinoceros calf on Tuesday, April 9 — just two days before she is 2 months old.

Zoo officials said Xola, who currently weighs 350 pounds, has not yet been introduced to the other rhinos besides her mother, Zenzele.

The public will be able to see Xola this summer. If you can't wait that long, the Indianapolis Zoo is offering a new experience called "Rhino Adventure: Mom & Baby Special Edition!"

The zoo says the exclusive encounter offers a behind-the-scenes look at Zenzele and Xola.

Tickets cost $125 per person and does not include general admission to the zoo. The experience runs from Apr. 11 to June 9.

Zenzele gave birth to Xola at 9:13 a.m. Feb. 11. It was the first live-birth rhinoceros calf for the zoo.

“Zenzele is an experienced and confident mom, and everything is going very well,” senior rhinoceros keeper Amber Berndt said.

Xola is Zenzele's seventh and brings the total number of white rhinos at the Indianapolis Zoo to five.
