After capturing program's first sectional title, Fishers hopes to keep momentum going vs. Kokomo

The Tigers beat the Wildkats by 20 in December, but head coach Garrett Winegar said that "feels like a year ago."

FISHERS, Ind. — Fishers High School still flying high after winning a boys basketball sectional title.

They're hoping to keep that momentum going into the regionals

The top-ranked Tigers mowed through one of the toughest sectionals in the state, bringing home their first sectional championship in program history.

"Obviously, to be the first ones to do it in school history, it's really exciting, but just to be able to do it with this group of guys, it's been a great team to coach all year, really unselfish, really worked hard," said Garrett Winegar, head coach. "I'm just happy that they get to experience this, get to go play in a regional. It's really exciting for these guys."

Senior guard Keenan Garner said the team is focused on achieving more firsts.

"It means a lot to us," he said. "That was one of our goals coming into the season, to win that first sectional and kind of cement ourselves in history. But we have a lot more that we want to do this season."

Making history every step of the way this season, Fishers is now 25-1 heading into a showdown with fourth-ranked Kokomo this weekend for a regional championship.

The Tigers beat the Wildkats back in December by 22 points, but this team knows it's a whole new game in the tournament and what's at stake.

"It feels like a year ago," Winegar said. "You know, they're playing so much better now. They've won 16 games in a row. They've really improved. Hopefully we've really improved as well. So, obviously you try to look at that game, see what you did. We'll take something from it, but at the end of the day, I think they're a different team. We're a different team. So we gotta prepare for it like it's a whole new game."

"We know, like, the magnitude of this game, what this means to our school and our team, like in general to make it to semi-state and then have a chance to play for a state championship," Garner added. "So, I feel like that's motivation enough, just the chance that we have to go play for a big game like this."

Saturday's regional championship game tips off at 4 p.m. at the legendary New Castle gym, another step in Fishers' journey to try and make history.
