Semi catches fire on I-65 northbound in Tippecanoe County

A semi caught fire on I-65 in Tippecanoe County Monday night.

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — A semi fire caused traffic delays on Interstate 65 near Lafayette Monday night.

According to state police, the fire occurred in the northbound lanes of the interstate at the 178 mile marker around 8:30 p.m. 

Traffic on I-65 was diverted off the interstate onto SR 43, north to SR 18. The detour then took drivers west on SR 18 to get back onto I-65 at the 188 mile marker.

ISP Sgt. Jeremy Piers tweeted a photo of the semi fire and encouraged drivers traveling that direction to use an alternate route, if possible, and to expect delays when driving through the area.

A tweet from INDOT indicated the northbound lanes would be closed past 10 p.m., but Piers later tweeted that the left lane had opened to traffic around 9 p.m. He tweeted that all lanes had opened by 10:30 p.m.
