Indiana AG discusses investigation of fetal remains found in home of late doctor

Hill said he wanted to look into whether any other licensed official handled the remains in the transport across state lines.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill discussed on Friday the investigation his office is doing into fetal remains found at the home of a former Indiana abortion doctor.

Hill said the 2,246 fetal remains were from 2000 to 2002. They were discovered in the Illinois home of Dr. Ulrich Klopfer after his death Sept. 3.

He had performed abortions at clinics in Fort Wayne, South Bend and Gary.

"Dr. Klopfer had been problematic in life and as it turns out, problematic in his death," Hill said.

Hill said he wanted to look into whether any other licensed official handled the remains in the transport across state lines.

With Dr. Klopfer's death, it appears the only other charges that could come to anyone else would be if licensed professionals helped with the transport of the fetal remains to Illinois or mishandled confidential medical records.

Hill said his office has received messages from individuals and organizations interested in helping with the burial or cremation of the fetal remains. The attorney general said his office has to determine how that will happen.

He also said they have not yet determined when and how the fetal remains will be returned from Illinois.

Anyone who believes they have a potential connection to the remains can call the attorney general's office at 317-234-6663 or Questions@atg.in.gov.
