Changes on the way for federal student loan forgiveness program

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was created more than a decade ago to attract workers to government and nonprofit jobs.

INDIANAPOLIS — After a lot of criticism, changes are coming to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

The program was created more than a decade ago to attract workers to government and nonprofit jobs. If you make 10 years of qualifying payments, your federal loans would go away.

The problem? Experts said hardly anyone qualified for the program.

So in a few months, there will be some changes.

Borrowers will be offered a time-limited waiver, allowing more payments to count toward their loan. Active duty will also now count toward the program for military service members.

The Department of Education said it plans to review denied applications and the entire process as a whole.
