World's oldest married couple celebrates 80th Valentine's Day together

AUSTIN, TEXAS (WTHR) — The world's oldest couple is celebrating their timeless love story.

Texas couple John and Charlotte Henderson are celebrating their 80th Valentine's Day together. They were recognized by Guinness World Records in 2019 as the oldest living couple on Earth, TODAY reported.

"It doesn't seem like it's been that long,'' John, who is 107 years old told TODAY. "Time does fly." His wife is 105. They celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary in November.

The couple first met in a zoology class at the University of Texas in 1934. John, who played football for the Longhorns, according to TODAY, sat right behind Charlotte.

"When I just saw her and got to talking to her, I don't think I ever had another date after that one day in the class,'' he said.

"Well, I'll tell you, he was just the nicest man you ever met,'' Charlotte said.

Their first date consisted of Coca-Cola. They were married five years later — the same year World War II began, TODAY reported.

John said he's made a homemade Valentine for Charlotte every year since.

"He's pretty romantic, when you get down to it," she said.

The couple never had children and instead spent their years together traveling the world.

Now retired in Austin, Texas, they exercise every day and enjoy a glass of wine together most nights.

Their secret to a long and happy marriage: "Never go to bed at night with a chip on your shoulder, and be glad you're with each other,'' John said.
