INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A woman is dead and another man was taken to the hospital following a fatal motorcycle crash on I-65 south, just north of Lafayette Road.

The wreck happened around 12:25 a.m. Monday on the city's northwest side. Indiana State Police said the two people were riding on the motorcycle when it crashed.

Police say the motorcycle driver saw backed up traffic due to construction, and went around construction barriers into a restricted area of the roadway to pass the traffic. The driver hit uneven pavement, lost control and struck a concrete median wall. Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing a helmet.

Police found an unconscious woman when they arrived. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The crash is still under investigation.
