Woman charged with neglecting baby unable to appear in court

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The initial hearing for Rachel McAfee will be rescheduled for a later date.

Prosecutors charged McAfee with neglect of a dependent resulting in death after her 3-month-old daughter Emma passed away.

According to the coroner, baby Emma died from exposure to the cold.

Police say they found Rachel passed out, reportedly from drinking in her SUV Tuesday afternoon.

Rachel's husband reported the pair missing Monday night. Court documents show she was supposed to take Emma to her in-laws and then go to an 11 a.m. intervention meeting.

Rachel’s attorney, Aaron Michael Freeman and prosecutors met with a judge in chambers Friday to discuss the next steps in her case.

Rachel McAfee, 36, is hospitalized with extreme frostbite and needs surgery.

An initial hearing date will be scheduled once McAfee has been cleared by doctors as healthy enough to appear in court.
