Widow of fallen officer encouraging others to be part of special project

SOUTHPORT, Ind. (WTHR) — As you get ready to send your kids back to school, a mother in Southport wants you to be part of an inspirational project.

Last year, we showed you a picture of Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan walking his son, Aaron Jr., to the bus stop on the first day of kindergarten. Lt. Allan was killed later that day and the picture of him with his son was an emotional part of our coverage.

Now Lt. Allan's wife, Stacy, is encouraging people to lead their children by example and show them that they don't walk alone in life.

She created a page on Facebook called "First Day Hero." She wants people to take the time to walk their child the bus (or school or the car), just like she and her husband did, take a picture of the moment and post it on her page.

"She'd love to see all those pictures," said Southport Police Chief Tom Vaughn. "It's just a way to give back a little bit to what she's been though this year."

Stacy says they got their first picture on Wednesday. You can also upload a picture on Facebook with the hashtag #1stDayHero.
