West Washington HS football coach passes away after suffering stroke during game

CAMPBELLSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) — A high school football coach in southern Indiana has passed away after suffering a stroke during a game.

West Washington High School Coach Phillip Bowsman suffered a "minor stroke" due to a blood clot while coaching the Semi-State game against Indianapolis Lutheran Friday, according to the district's Facebook page.

Initially, the district said Bowsman was expected to fully recover. Saturday night, the district said the coach was undergoing brain surgery to relieve pressure from swelling.

West Washington School Corp. announced there will be an Honor Walk for Coach Bowsman at St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Preliminary funeral arrangements have also been set.

The visitation will be Friday, Nov. 29 at Mt. Tabor Church and the funeral service will be on Saturday, Nov. 30.
