Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog: Statewide tornado drill Tuesday

Indiana will have a statewide tornado drill Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. to make sure residents know their severe weather plan.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana — a time to learn and prepare for severe weather when it arrives.

Indiana sees the highest concentration of tornadoes during the months of April, May, and June, so now is the time to make sure you're ready if severe weather threatens.

The first thing to know is the difference in a watch and a warning. If a severe weather watch is issued for your area, conditions are right for severe storms to happen. This is the time to review your plans to seek shelter should a warning be issued.

A warning is then issued when the severe weather is happening and moving into your area and immediate action should be taken. This can either be radar-indicated from a meteorologist or a trained storm spotter or local law enforcement has confirmed the storm is happening in the field.

It is important to know what your severe weather action plan is before storms strike. To help you prepare, there will be an Indiana statewide tornado drill at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 15. This is the time to put your plan into action at home, school, or in the office. Make sure you know where your warnings come from, be it a cellphone notification or app, weather radio, or TV broadcast.
