INDIANAPOLIS — If you're a fan of spring-like air during winter, you're loving life right now. After a brief bout of light rain, central Indiana is reaping the rewards of peeks of sun and a southwest breeze.

This is resulting in unseasonably mild air with temperatures near 60° — some 20° above average. The temperature map this afternoon is more indicative of late March than early February.

Passing showers remain in play over southern Indiana ahead of a front/wind shift.

That front delivers a much colder morning (near 30°) Wednesday compared to Tuesday morning (near 50°). Wednesday begins dry and possibly with some sun before a heavier rainmaker races into the state Wednesday evening.

Rain becomes widespread between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and becomes heavy by midnight.

While we don't envision widespread severe weather, embedded gusts nearing severe levels (58+ mph) and/or rotating showers/storms are possible.

That would especially be true on downpours along a stronger cold front crossing the state early Thursday morning.

It would not be surprising to see the current Level 1 severe risk for Wednesday night/Thursday morning to be stretched more northeast to include some of central Indiana. Either way, we'll monitor closely for potential warnings.

With or without severe thunderstorms, strong non-thunderstorm wind gusts exceeding 50 mph are possible, if not likely. This could result in some wind damage and/or power outages.

Thursday high temperatures occur early in the day within the warm sector of the strengthening storm system and peak near 60° before rapidly dropping into the 40s within a few hours.

Thursday afternoon will be blustery and much colder, with windchills making it "feel" some 30° colder than the balmy start.

The atmosphere becomes cold enough Thursday night into Friday for a mixture of rain and snow.

It's possible some of the snow showers could be heavy enough for localized coatings of snow.

The snowfall will have more bark than bite and mainly signify a chillier start to this weekend, but the chill will be brief in nature.

A quick return to the upper 40s/lower 50s arrives early next week...with the potential of more 60°+ days on the 15th and 16th.
