Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog: Extended heat streak underway

We're staring down a heat wave and impending hot dome during the climatological hottest part of summer.

INDIANAPOLIS — Welcome to day one of potentially two weeks straight of 90+ degree days in central Indiana. While hot temperatures are certainly not uncommon during July, having more than 10 consecutive 90+ degree days doesn't happen often.

In fact, since record-keeping began in Indianapolis, it's only happened 25 times. If this forecast verifies, it would be the first such streak since the infamously hot summer of 2012.

The air this evening, at least on the eastern half of the state, is slightly less humid due to the passage of a weak front. A resulting east-northeast looks to drop the Muggy Meter somewhat the next couple of days.

This would make the air more comfortable, but the trade-off would be hotter high temperatures in the coming days. So it's pick your poison - highs near 90° with dew points near 70° and heat indices 95°-100°, or it's less humid air (which heats/cools more efficiently) and highs in the mid/upper 90s.

Either way you slice it, we're staring down a heat wave and impending hot dome during the climatological hottest part of summer.

Heat advisories and/or heat warnings seem very possible given the duration of this event and building effects on outdoor activities. Please be smart if you must be outside. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.

Unfortunately, we expect little, if any, widespread rainfall with this pattern though the occasional late-day shower or storm is possible during peak-heating.
