Weather Blog: First snow of the season for most arrives Monday

Thankfully, we're not expecting significant impacts to the morning commute due to temperatures near/above freezing.

INDIANAPOLIS — Ready or not, many areas on Monday will get their first snowfall of the season.

Thankfully, we're not expecting significant impacts to the morning commute due to temperatures near/above freezing.

With a transition from a mix of rain/snow/sleet to mainly snow occurring between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., don't expect to wake up with snow covering the ground. Much of the initial snowfall likely melts on contact.

Snow rates should be light enough when combined with above freezing temperatures to assist the many road crews expected to be out in the morning.

With that said, it's definitely going to look like a snow globe at times Monday as the snow falls into a strengthening, gusty wind that may exceed 30 mph at times.

It'll be a much colder day overall with highs only in the low/mid 30s and wind chills in the upper teens/lower 20s.

Monday evening's colder temperatures will carry over into Tuesday, and with persistent lake effect bands downwind of Lake Michigan, roads will get more slick and locally higher accumulation occurs.

For now, the greatest impacts from lake effect are expected north-northeast of Indy, which is reflected in the snowfall forecast produced Sunday afternoon.

Please note these numbers are for the entire event.

Lingering lake effect diminishes by Tuesday afternoon as the wind shifts to the west and ends the fetch of the water.

Quieter weather settles in mid-week before a stretch of cloudiness and low rain chances Thursday/Friday.
