Red is everywhere as Valentine's Day approaches. But if you're not careful, your checkbook could be in the red, too.

You can still share the love without breaking the bank if you use a few simple strategies:

  • Plan ahead so you shop smart and avoid last-minute impulse purchases
  • Keep cards simple, especially for the kids at school
  • It doesn't have to be candy - there are plenty of other heart-shaped foods
  • Agree to celebrate after Feb. 14. Restaurants will not be as busy and gifts go on clearance
  • Be smart about flowers, and don't overlook your grocery store
