WATCH: Dale Jr. transitioning to new TV gig

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (WCNC) ā€“ One of NASCAR's most popular drivers moved from racing to forecasting the weather Friday morning.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. delivered the weekend forecast on Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC alongside his favorite weatherman.

Back in March the North Carolina native tweeted that "Larry Sprinkle of Charlotte NC" is his favorite forecaster.


Junior says he grew up watching Sprinkle, however they didn't meet until 2002 at the Winter Olympics in Utah.

Earnhardt is retiring after this season. and says he's looking forward to life off the race track.

"With everything I've got going on in my life, my marriage, a little girl on the way, an opportunity to go into the booth next year with NBC, I'm really excited about that and Iā€™m ready to start that new chapter," says Earnhardt.

Earnhardt and his wife Amy are expecting their first child in May.

He will join NBC Sports group's NASCAR coverage in 2018.
