INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A homeowner is recovering after being shot and pistol-whipped during an armed robbery Wednesday night.

It happened around 9:00 on Graceland Avenue near Capitol and 38th.

Police say the man had just come home from the store when two masked men forced in into the house and demanded money.

He was attacked and shot in the leg during the crime, but officers say his wife fired a shot, likely scaring off the robbers.

Two children were also inside the home while that was all going on.

Neighbors say they are still processing what happened.

“When I saw the address, they popped in my mind. because they have always been nice to me. Everybody speaks to them and they work and help people out and they were just a target by whoever walks through here,” said Randy McCrackin.

“They are such a nice family. They bring me Sunday dinner, they help me with my yard, anything I need help with, I can count on them. They are just a safe haven for our block and for someone to come and try to take from them and their family is just devastating,” said Dana Miller.

Police say the robbers were wearing ski masks and gray clothing and aren't sure if they left on foot or a car.
