MARINETTE, Wis. (WTHR) — The new USS Indianapolis is getting ready to go into service.

But first, the ship needs to do some testing.

Lockheed Martin launched the ship on its side into the water Wednesday.

The ship is a warship for the U.S. Navy that can be used for a variety of missions. It's designed to navigate in coastal waters.

Jill Donnelly, Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly's wife, helped christen the ship last weekend.

The USS Indianapolis Commissioning Committee unveiled the ship's crest at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway March 23.
