INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The United States Postal Service is helping Hoosiers get their passports with a passport fair at Butler University.

The fair will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 4-6 p.m. in the Fairview Community Room on Butler's campus.

USPS recommends applying for passports at least eight weeks before an international trip to avoid more costs for expediting the process. Currently the U.S. Department of State has about a six-week processing time for passport applications.

Passports are $145 for applicants 16 and older. It includes $110 for the application fee and a $35 processing fee to USPS. For children younger than 16, passports cost $105 — $80 application fee and $25 processing fee.

It's an additional $60 to expedite the application.

To get a passport, have these documents with you to make the process go smoothly:

  • Proof of American citizenship
  • Proof of identity
  • Passport photo (USPS can take an acceptable photo for $15)

Applicants can complete their application online on the Department of State website before arriving in person.

Applicants younger than 16 must appear with both parents, or a notarized authorization from an absent parent if one cannot attend.
