INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The 500 Festival announced Thursday that General Joseph L. Lengyel will be the Keynote Speaker at the 500 Festival Memorial Service on Friday, May 25.

Lengyel, who serves as Chief of the National Guard Bureau and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will address the crowd during the service from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis.

The event is free and open to the public.

"This Memorial Day, it's important to reflect upon the legacy left to us by thousands of brave and selfless men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting our nation's wars,” said General Lengyel in a statement released by the 500 Festival. “The freedom all Americans enjoy is their most significant gift."

Lengyel, a four-star general, is a direct advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense and National Security Council. He is also the official channel of communication between the DOD and state governors and State Adjutants General.

Joining General Lengyel at the 500 Festival Memorial Service, presented by Rolls-Royce, is Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Courtney P. Carr of the National Guard Bureau.

The Memorial Service features the joint service color guard presentation of colors and performances by the Capital City Chorus and the Indiana National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division Band.

A wreath-laying ceremony and a horse-drawn caisson will be presented by the Indiana National Guard Headquarters Ceremonial Unit. The caisson carries the remains of the fallen service member, while the caparisoned horse trails behind.
