IMPD has made an arrest in a July 13 homicide that occurred in the 2500 block of East 18th Street.

32 year-old Stephen Jones was detained at the scene and was arrested Wednesday on a preliminary murder charge.

He's accused of the murder of 34-year-old Martha Cronkhite, who was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds July 13 in the basement of her home, according to IMPD spokesperson Lt. Rich Riddle.

"We have a lot of stuff happening, but this is really close to home," said Amanda Parks.

Parks lives two houses down from the victim. She was coming home from work Monday morning when she saw the police cars.

"Something like this, really close to home, like a house away from your house...it's really scary. Really scary," she said. "Especially if you got kids, we're women, this happened to a woman. It's awful."

Police say the woman who owns the home where the homicide happened arrived home around 8:30 a.m. Monday. When she went inside, she found the victim, a tenant of the home, dead in the basement. The victim is in her thirties.

As homicide detectives waited on an official search warrant to go inside, crime lab workers started their job outside the home.

The investigation got interrupted by heavy rain rolling through the metro area, but eventually, with search warrant in hand, detectives got an up close look to help them start asking the right questions.

"We're talking with a few people that may have some knowledge. We are hoping that they will shed some light on this situation so we can have a better understanding of what's going on," said IMPD Lt. Roger Spurgeon.

Understanding the crime was most likely not a random act of violence, Parks still wants the person responsible caught sooner, rather than later.

"It's an isolated incident, so I am not, like, super scared something is going to happen," she said.

If you have information that can help police in their investigation, call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
