Police say they began a pursuit after a suspect in a Chevy Tahoe who was involved in a theft at the Beech Grove Walmart on Emerson Avenue. That suspect was later identified as 21-year-old Matthew Edmonds of Indianapolis. Edmonds was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, theft and driving while suspended with a prior conviction.

"It was in the other lane going head-on toward traffic and he was going hit and miss cars," said witness Pam Shireman. "Then, the Beech Grove Police was following him on the other side in the right way of going."

The high-speed chased continued northbound on Emerson Avenue until police decided the area was becoming too congested to continue. They terminated the chase, but the Tahoe continued down Emerson at a high rate of speed.

Police say they continued to monitor the SUV.

It ran a red light around 8:15 a.m. at State and Prospect in Fountain Square, hitting a a black truck with three passengers. The truck then hit a car.

The three occupants of the black pickup truck were said to be in extremely critical condition at the accident scene. The adult female driver was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, but did not survive her injuries. An adult female passenger was also transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. A young male passenger was transported to Riley Hospital, where he remains in extremely critical condition. The boy is a student at William McKinney School 39. The driver of the third vehicle involved in this collision was not injured.

Edmonds jumped out of the Tahoe and tried to run. He was taken into police custody and then taken to Eskenazi for minor injuries.
